Lessons from an imperfect parent, we strive to give our children the best possible life. We want them to eat healthy foods, ace math tests and go to sleep on time. But sometimes things don’t go as planned, and even the best parents make mistakes.

These parenting mistakes — whether they involve spilled milk, forgetting the tooth fairy, or yelling at your child — are normal and can teach our kids important lessons about making decisions in stressful situations. They also teach our children that it’s okay to make mistakes, and that apologizing and trying again are ways to fix them.

Lessons from an Imperfect Parent: Growth Through the Chaos

It’s also a good idea to let our children see us dealing with the aftermath of our mistakes, and to model empathy, self-compassion, and forgiveness. For example, if your child doesn’t do well on an exam, you can talk about a time you didn’t do so well on a test (and how you felt), and then suggest ways to study better for the next one.

Of course, it’s important to set limits for the types of mistakes that you are willing to forgive yourself for. If you find yourself judging yourself harshly for minor missteps, it’s probably a sign that you are holding yourself to an impossible standard. This type of perfectionism will lead to anxiety for you and your children as they try to live up to it. Embracing imperfect parenting means letting go of that false standard and finding new ways to love and guide your children along the way.…
